Saturday is here, and your lawn is looking shabby. It’s time to pull old faithful and start her up to mow your lawn. After pulling on the ripcord so many times that your hands feel like they’re going to start bleeding, you decide to call it a day. The lawn will be there next week, sure – it might be a bit longer, but you’ll worry about that next weekend.

Gas-powered mowers are so 2010. Today’s technology is moving to the electric world. With entrepreneurs like Elon Musk making electric vehicles more mainstream, it’s not surprising to see mower manufacturers focusing on designing and building electric lawnmowers.

By using an battery powered electric lawnmower, you not only get a fast and efficient cut that’s comparable to gas-powered models, but you also get to help save the planet as well by reducing your household carbon footprint.

Plus, as a bonus, you don’t have to deal with managing an extension cable while you mow your lawn. Running over the electrical extension is not only inconvenient, but it’s also downright dangerous as well.

So, pack old faithful away, and read through this review of the best cordless lawn mowers available. Our buyer’s guide gives you more tips for choosing the right model to suit your yard, and we also make our recommendations for the best cordless lawn mowers as well.

This 80-volt Greenworks cordless lawnmower I the most powerful and long-lasting in this review. The mower comes in a 4.0-AH battery version, or a 2.0-AH battery version. We recommend you stick to the 4.0-AH battery for best results when mowing your lawn. The power-on offer with the 4.0-AH model is outstanding and competes with gas-powered models.
  • The Premium Pick: Ego Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower
The EGO Power+ is a close second to the Greenworks, and we recommend it if you don’t have the budget to splash out on the Greenworks model. With this lawnmower, you get cordless operation and excellent run time.

After reading through the reviews, check out our buyer’s guide for more information to help you make an informed purchase decision on your new cordless lawnmower.

Greenworks PRO 21-Inch 80V Cordless Lawn Mower

The PRO 21-inch model on offer from Greenworks is one of the leaders in its class. This machine is everything you would expect from a cordless electric mower, and then some. The Greenworks PRO model comes with an 80-volt battery pack, which is the strongest battery pack on offer in this review.

The 80-volt batteries power a brushless motor that cuts through the most robust grass like a gas-powered model. This model comes with options for a 2.0-Amp Hour battery pack, or a 4.0-Amp Hour battery pack.

We suggest you only consider the 4.0-Amp Hour version if you have a larger lawn, as the run time with the 2.0-Amp Hour battery is less than desirable. However, with the 4.0-Amp Hour model, you get a run time of 60-minutes, which should suffice for cutting your lawn to perfection.

You might think that a 4.0-Amp Hour battery powering an 80-volt motor would require hours of charge time between uses. However, with the Greenworks, you get a rapid charging setup that can have you back mowing your lawn in a few hours after setting it up on the charger.

Recently, contractors and landscapers are taking flak from their clients for using petrol-powered mowers. We live in an eco-conscious age, and some clients might object to you using a petrol mower on their property.

Sale
Greenworks 80V 21" Brushless Cordless (Push) Lawn Mower (75+ Compatible Tools), 4.0Ah Battery and 60 Minute Rapid Charger Included
  • Up to 60 minutes run-time with fully charged 4.0Ah battery. Run-time varies based on grass condition and operator technique.
  • Highly efficient brushless motor provides more torque, quiet operation, and longer life.
  • Durable 21" cutting deck gets the job done quicker and more efficiently.
  • 3-In-1 system: mulch, rear bagging, and side discharge.
  • Single lever 7-position height adjustment for the best cut in all grass conditions.

Last update on 2024-11-27 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

In this case, the Greenworks offers the top electric choice for contractors. Some landscapers might complain that they need more than 60-minutes run time to mow some of their client’s large lawns.

However, you can purchase spare battery packs from Greenworks, and rotate them in the charger, giving you unlimited run time, and peace of mind for your clients.

The Greenworks PRO 21-inch model comes with a digitally controlled motor that senses the grass your mowing, and its resistance to the blades. If the machine thinks it’s underpowered, it turns up the speed of the blades automatically, allowing you to cut through the toughest grasses.

While the Greenworks offers homeowners and contractors some serious power for mowing any lawn, it’s surprising to hear next to no sound when you start the mower.

The electric mower runs near-silent, and you can barely hear the blades spinning until they come in contact with grass. Your neighbors will love you for not walking them up with your noisy petrol mower on the weekends.

One of the most exciting design features of this model is that it feels like operating a gas-powered mower. The battery packs feature positioning on the chassis that allows for maximum leverage over the machine, giving you better control of the mower.

The ergonomic handle has adjustments to suit gardeners of any height, and the large wheels move over any terrain and make it easy to push the mower up slopes. The reliable and sturdy deck feature fabrication from steel and the mower has strong steel axles to support its movement around your yard.

The only drawback of this mower is the design of the rear wheels. The wheels feature a scoop on the inside that collects grass cutting and debris, requiring you to clean them out after each use. With the Greenworks, you get a clean cut for your lawn and a 4-year manufacturer’s warranty on the machine.

The Greenworks PRO 21-inch electric lawnmower is the flagship model in this review, and if you have the budget available, then we highly recommend this machine for your lawn.

Cordless Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide

Most gardeners can’t imagine the thought of pushing along a silent mower. Most of us grew up with the sound of gas-powered lawnmowers whirring away on a Saturday or Sunday morning around the neighborhood.

However, innovations in battery technology mean that electric lawn mowers are now a reality.  Choosing the right battery-powered lawn mower for your garden might be a confusing experience, and that’s why we wrote this buyer’s guide for you.

Here’s everything you need to know about cordless electric mowers, and why you should consider purchasing one of these electric models over a gas-powered unit for your next lawnmower.

The Benefits of a Battery-Powered Cordless Lawn Mower

What are the benefits of owning a battery-powered lawnmower? In this section, we’ll unpack the pros and cons of owning a battery-powered lawnmower.

Kiss Your Gas Goodbye

We’ve all been there. You wake up on a Saturday morning, prepare to mow the lawn, drag old faithful out onto the grass – and then you realize you forgot to buy gas for the mower yesterday.

You fetch the gas, mix the oil, and pour it into your mowers gas tank. After 15-pulls, the motor still refuses to turn over, and you realize you flooded the carburetor. So far, today’s lawn mowing is not going to plan, and the sun is starting to get hot as it reaches midday.

The chances are that this situation happened to you more than once while trying to mow your lawn over the years. Fortunately, with a battery-powered electric lawnmower, you can kiss those problems goodbye.

Gas-powered mowers are a pain to work with for any gardener. The gas often requires mixing with 2-stroke oil at a specific ration, and if you get it wrong, you could damage the machine. The cast-iron block of a lawnmower engine weighs a ton, and dragging the mower around the yard is a chore that leaves you feeling like you had a workout at the gym.

With a battery-powered cordless electric model, the machine starts with the press of a button on the first try. You don’t have any noise polluting the airwaves around your neighborhood, and no fossil fuel emissions are ruining the environment.

Electric vs Gas Lawn Mowers:

Read: Electric vs Gas Lawn Mowers: Which is Best?

Cordless Vs. Corded Electric Lawnmowers

Why should you choose a battery-powered lawnmower over an electric mower with a cable? When mowing your lawn with an electric mower, the extension cable provides the power to the machine.

As a result, you have a limit on the reach of your mower. If the extension doesn’t reach the corners of the garden, then you have a problem.

With a battery-powered mower, you have the freedom to roam your garden with your mower, without the thought of running out of extension cord. The cord also presents an irritation for the gardener when mowing as well.

As you move the mower back and forth along the lawn, you’ll have to ensure that you keep moving the cable away from the machine. If you’re not paying attention, you could run over the cable and sever it, damaging your mower.

There are no cables with battery-powered models, and you get the same mowing experience that you would with a gas-powered model.

Weight Considerations

In most cases, battery-powered lawn mowers weigh much less than its gas-powered alternative. The heaviest part of the machine is the battery pack, which might account for up to 40% of the machine’s total weight.

Due to the lightweight construction of cordless lawn mowers, they’re easy to push around the yard and up slopes with minimal effort. Due to the lightweight construction, you get less operator fatigue in your arms after you finish mowing.

Noise Levels

Gas-powered machines are noisy. The exhaust for the machine barely does anything to muffle the sound of the engine, and mowing your lawn early on a Saturday morning could leave you in the bad books with your neighbors for all of the ruckuses you cause mowing the lawn.

Battery-powered electric mowers barely make any noise at all. The only sound emanating from the machine is the whir of the blades as they spin and cut the grass. These machines run near-silent, and they’re quieter than electric edgers or weed whackers.

Eco-Friendly Operation

Dragging your gas-powered motor around the yard is hard work, both on you and the environment. Gas-powered machines come in 2-stroke and 4-stroke versions, but both burn petrol and oil. It might surprise you to learn that lawnmowers count toward 5% of the United States’ annual greenhouse emissions.

Manufacturers must meet regulatory guidelines for emissions produced by lawnmowers, proving that they are a concern.

With a battery-operated electric lawn mower, you get all the power of a gas-mower, without the emissions. Sure, it may require electricity to power the unit, but at least you’re not flagrantly polluting your local environment with petrol fumes.

Minimal Maintenance

Before the spring rolls around, and your grass starts to turn green and grow, you’ll need to take a gas-powered mower to an agent for servicing.

The agent replaces the fuel and air filters, cleans the carburetor, and the fuel lines. This essential maintenance keeps your mower running, and prevents mechanical failure of the machine.

Services for your mower can be expensive, and they often take a few days to complete, especially at the start of the spring, when everyone wants to service their mower.

With a cordless electric model, there’s no servicing required to maintain the machine. All you need to do is keep it clean and make sure the battery stays charged.

Lithium-ion battery packs have a long service life and can last for anywhere between three and five years before they require replacement.

Electric Lawn Mowers

What to Look for When Buying a Cordless Electric Mower?

Now that you know the benefits of owning a cordless electric mower, it’s time to analyze what you need to look for when purchasing your unit.

The following is a checklist you can run through when deciding on your purchase. We use these criteria for our review to determine the final recommendation of the machine.

  • Power rating.
  • Battery specs.
  • The cutting deck size.
  • User experience.
  • Additional features.

Power Rating

Every cordless electric lawn mower comes with a power rating describing the volt-rating of the machine, and the Amp-hours provided by the battery pack.

Typically, motors with power ratings over 50-volts are suitable for use in your yard, and they offer performance that’s on par with gas-powered models.

Battery Specs

The Amp-hour reading on the battery pack tells you how much energy the battery stores. You’ll be looking for a machine with a battery pack that has a minimum of 4.0-AH on offer.

The power rating plays a significant role in the user experience of the machine, and if you have an underpowered model, you might find it frustrating when the blade keeps slowing down as it encounters tough grass.

The Cutting Deck

The cutting deck width describes the reach of the blades, and how big of an area the mower can cut with a single pass. Smaller mowers have decks under 20-inches, while larger capacity mowers will have cutting decks larger than 20-inches.

Many manufacturers choose 20-inches as the sweet spot for battery-operated electric mowers. However, the cutting deck width is not the only consideration you need to take into account when making your purchase.

User Experience

It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a gas-powered mower, or an electric model – If the machine does not have a user-friendly operation, then it’s a waste of your money and time.

User-experience describes everything from starting the mower to using it to cut your grass, charging the battery, and packing it away for storage.

The user experience is so critical that you could have a machine with all the bells and whistles, but if it’s a chore to operate, it’s a second-rate machine. Always ensure that you read up on other people’s testimonials before checking out with your new cordless electric mower.

Additional Features

Check the model you’re interested in buying for additional features. Some mowers have an auto-throttle, which adjusts the power to suit mowing conditions.

This feature is excellent for mowing lawns where you have more than one species of grass. The machine detects resistance against the cutting blades and increases the power to the blade driveshaft to cut through the grass.

Some lawnmowers also come with LED headlights, and while we never mow the lawn at night, we can see how these headlights could be beneficial if you live in a region of the United States that has short daylight hours in the late fall.

Also, check the mower for safety features such as trigger locks, safety guards, and stone deflectors. The last thing you want is the blades of your mower flinging stones at the windows of your home.

Conclusion

After reading through our reviews of the best cordless electric lawnmowers, and reviewing the information in our buyer’s guide, you should have a better understanding of the characteristics of a good cordless mower.

However, if you’re still scratching your head trying to decide on the right lawnmower for your yard, why not take our advice and try one of our top picks in this review?

You can’t go wrong with the Greenworks 80-volt mower, with its near gas-like performance. However, if you want a smaller machine for your yard, but still demand the best quality, we recommend our runner up; The WORX WG774.

If you’re on a budget and looking for the most affordable battery-operated electric mower you can find, then you can’t beat the value that’s on offer with the Sun Joe.

Since this mower is battery-powered, you are somewhat limited in how long you can use the mower in a single go. For the most part, the battery should last for 45 minutes of run-time, assuming you buy the version with the included battery and charger!

You might also appreciate the brushless motor, which makes this self-propelled mower extremely quiet. So, no more complaints from neighbors when you decide to get your mowing done early in the day.

When it’s time to adjust your cut, you can find the perfect height for your lawn. That’s because this mower comes with seven different height positions to allow you to get the perfect cut that meets your home’s style.

The greatest downside is that this mower doesn’t come with the battery or the charger, meaning you’ll have to buy each separately. That’ll cost you a little extra money, so you might want to lean more toward a product that comes with all supplies in one package.

Specs

  • Battery-powered (80V)
  • Tool only and 4Ah battery packages
  • 3-in-1 discharge
  • 21 inches
  • Rear-wheel-drive (RWD)
  • 74 pounds
Pros:
  • Comes with a 4 year warranty for the tool and 2 year warranty for the battery
  • 7 height positions for a more ideal cut
  • The rare quiet brushless motor
Cons:
  • Battery needs to be consistently recharged

PowerSmart Self Propelled Gas Lawn Mower

Even though you’ll be spending a lot more money on this mower (as compared to some others on our list), you’re getting a pretty decent product for your cash. In all honesty, this PowerSmart mower has practically every feature you could possibly want.

When it comes to functionality, the four-wheel-drive feature makes this mower more than ideal. With such impressive traction and control, you can easily maneuver your mower over hills and uneven terrain without much effort from you.

No products found.

To make the job even easier and travel more distance in a quicker period of time, the 11.5-inch wheels will be exactly what you didn’t know you needed. Add on the high-powered 200cc engine and you’ve got yourself a little beast.

Since you’re spending a boatload on this mower, you’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief when you find out that this mower comes with a 3 year limited warranty. So, you don’t have to worry about shelling out any extra money to get your mower fixed.

What you might find a little inconvenient about this mower is the sheer weight of it. Even though it is self-propelled and should move on its own, tipping and turning the mower will require a little bit of extra work on your part.

Also, grass tends to accumulate inside the mower. It might require a lot of time to take the mower apart, remove any grass particles, and then put it back together after cleaning, so make sure you’re good with your hands.

Specs

  • Gas-powered (200cc)
  • 3-in-1 cutting deck
  • 21 inches
  • Four-wheel-drive
Pros:
  • Three adjustable handle heights
  • Comes with a heavy-duty  engine
  • Four-wheel-drive makes it perfect for just about any terrain
  • Offers a 3 year warranty with purchase
Cons:
  • Cleaning and disassembling this mower seems to be tricky
  • The mower is rather heavy at 95 pounds

CRAFTSMAN M215 140cc 21-Inch 3-in-1 High-Wheeled FWD Self-Propelled Gas Powered Lawn Mower

Why would you spend your entire paycheck on a mower when you can get a high-quality self-propelled mower for about half the price of some of the more expensive models? That’s exactly why we chose this Craftsman model as #2 on our list.

The key feature of this mower is the fact that it has Surecut Blades, which were installed to prevent clumping, especially when you’re mulching. That means you don’t have to take breaks mid-cut to remove the clumps that seem to build-up with other mowers.

But, what’s really cool about this mower is that you can personalize it however you want. For one, it comes with six different height adjustments, which is perfect for switching up your grass height depending on the weather or sun intensity.

No products found.

We also want to point out the drive selection. You have full control over whether you’re using this mower as a rear-wheel-drive, front-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive mower. It’s incredibly easy to switch between the different drive systems and allows you to take better control of your cutting.

Just choose RWD or AWD if you’re in a particularly hilly area of your yard that requires a ton of traction and switch over to FWD when you’re cutting the flatter regions of your yard. You can decide between discharge methods, so bagging, mulching, and side discharge are all options.

When it’s time to speed up the job (or slow it down), it’s super easy to change the speed with the variable speed controls. There’s no shortage of user-friendly features with this mower.

Even though this product is definitely one of the best, there does seem to be an issue with hand fatigue for longer cuts. So, this might not be the best option if you’re looking for an ergonomic design that’s gentle on the body.

Specs

  • Gas-powered (159cc)
  • 3-in-1 discharge
  • 21 Inches
  • All-wheel-drive (AWD)
  • 82 pounds
Pros:
  • Comes with a 2 year limited warranty
  • Choose between FWD, RWD, or AWD with ease
  • No more relying on batteries with short runtimes
  • Variable speeds and height adjustments for the perfect cut
Cons:
  • Hand fatigue is definitely possible

Snapper XD 82V MAX Cordless Electric 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Kit

We know what you’re thinking: “Finally, a battery-powered self-propelled mower that has batteries and a charger included!” Those seem to be difficult to come by these days, so that’s one of the major reasons we chose this model from Snapper as one of our top favorites.

So, each package comes with the lawn mower, two 2Ah batteries, and a rapid charger. The battery usually lasts for about a 45 minute cut and the batteries only take between 30 and 60 minutes to charge completely, which is pretty efficient.

Sale
Snapper 1687914 21" SP Walk Mower Kit, Self Propelled, Red/Black
  • Self propelled transmission with variable speed
  • Up to 45 minutes run time with the Briggs & Stratton 82V Lithium ion 2.0Ah battery kit comes with (2) 2Ah Lithium ion batteries and rapid charger

  • Smart, efficient load sensing technology power adjusts to meet the demands of the cutting blades
  • Push button start and a single lever, 7 position height of cut adjustment; Rear wheel size: 10 inch

Last update on 2024-11-28 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

If the batteries that come with the mower just don’t seem to be cutting it, you can also invest in your own higher power batteries to boost your performance and cutting speed. Until then, you’re going to have to use the adjustable power setting to choose the ideal cutting style mid-cut.

When it comes to how well it cuts, the fact that you have seven different cutting heights is more than enough for most people. You’ll also be able to store up to 2 cubic feet of clippings in the included bag, meaning you have to take fewer breaks to empty the bag mid-cut.

The large 10-inch wheels will allow your self-propelled mower to travel more efficiently and the brushless motor will keep your mower as quiet as possible. So, you can get your mowing down quicker and without disturbing the neighbors.

Even though the push-button start makes this mower extremely easy to use, a lot of users have noted that they’ve received mowers with batteries that were already dead. That means you might have to invest in your own brand new battery anyway.

Specs

  • Battery-powered (82V)
  • 3-in-1 discharge
  • 21 inches
  • 81 pounds
Pros:
  • Large 10-inch wheels are more efficient
  • Actually comes with the battery and charger
  • Extremely quiet motor for less noise production
  • Can use your own battery if the included just isn’t enough
Cons:
  • Some people have received batteries that were already dead

BLACK+DECKER 21-Inch 3-in-1 Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower with 140cc OHV Engine

When you’re on a budget, but still want a decent self-propelled mower, you can’t go wrong with this model from Yard Machines. It comes absolutely ready-to-use, meaning all you have to do is take it out of the box and fuel it up.

Keep in mind that, because of the lower price of this mower, you’re also going to be missing out on quite a few convenience features.

No products found.

This model comes with six adjustable height settings for your ideal cut, but you’ll also appreciate the fact that you can choose between side discharge and mulching. This model doesn’t come with a bag, so be wary of purchasing if you’re only used to bagged mowers.

The manufacturer claims that this product can handle all types of terrain with ease, but we want to point out that it is front-wheel-drive. So, it might be an efficient mower, but it’ll definitely do better with flatter lawns.

This mower is also single-speed. Combine that with the front-wheel-drive feature and you’ve got the perfect mower for small and flat yards. However, this mower won’t fare too well with large or hilly yards, so don’t just buy this product because of the price.

The good news is that you’ll be getting a 2 year warranty when you purchase this mower. The bad news is that the mower seems to break down quite easily and doesn’t appear fixable once this happens, so you might want to lean toward a more durable mower to save cash.

Specs

  • Gas-powered (140cc)
  • 2-in-1 (side and mulch)
  • 21 inches
  • Front-wheel-drive (FWD)
  • 81 pounds
Pros:
  • Comes with a 2 year warranty
  • Ready-to-use upon delivery
  • Very affordable compared to other products
  • Perfect for flat and small lawns (one speed, FWD, etc.)
Cons:
  • The engine doesn’t seem as powerful as described
  • Doesn’t come with bagging feature

What’s really neat is that you can easily adjust the height of the mower from one side rather than having to adjust on both sides. This can save you a little time and can guarantee an even cut no matter which specific height you desire.

In terms of usability, the fact that this mower runs on a rear-wheel-drive system makes it the perfect high-powered mower for hilly yards and uneven terrain. You can be sure that this mower will do everything on its own with just a tiny bit of guidance from you.

What you’ll definitely appreciate is the fact that this mower is lightweight and much easier to maneuver. Add that to the fact that this mower comes with a significantly larger bag and you’ve got an efficient mower perfect for quick cuts.

What you do want to be wary about is using this mower to cut high grass. The mower seems to struggle with tall grass and the entire product seems to break pretty easily with consistent use, so that warranty is definitely going to come in handy!

Specs

  • Battery powered
  • 21 inches
  • Rear-wheel-drive (RWD)
  • 66 pounds
Pros:
  • Perfect for hills and uneven terrain
  • Easily adjust the height on just one side
  • Extremely lightweight compared to other models
Cons:
  • Doesn’t fare too well when cutting higher grass

EGO 21″ 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Self Propelled Lawn Mower

Last but certainly not least, we have a battery-powered mower from EGO. As with most battery-powered mowers, this one doesn’t come with the EGO power+ arc lithium battery or the charger, so you’ll have to shell out even more money for separate purchases of each.

This is a great mower for nearly any purpose. First off, it’s considered weather-resistant, meaning it’ll be able to hold up if you find yourself caught up in a sunshower during your weekend mowing session.

EGO 21" 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Self Propelled Lawn Mower (Battery and Charger Not Included)
  • Delivers the torque of gas-powered mowers
  • Self-propelled with easy push-button start
  • No noise, mess or fumes for easy operation
  • 21 in 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery Walk Behind Self Propelled Lawn Mower - Battery/Charger NOT Included

Last update on 2024-11-28 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

There are also LED headlights attached to the front of the mower, which only adds to your visibility if you find yourself mowing around dusk or in heavy fog.

When it comes to battery-powered self-propelled mowers, you want a product that’s easy to charge and lasts a long time. The manufacturer states that this mower can run for 60 minutes straight, but you might find that the battery doesn’t last quite as long as they suggest.

What you definitely will appreciate, however, is that this high-powered mower has a similar torque to comparable gas-powered mowers. It also has a brushless motor, meaning your mowing sessions will be quiet and won’t wake up the whole neighborhood.

You can easily adjust the deck height with a single lever into any of the six positions that suits your cutting needs. When your mowing is done for the day, you can fold the mower up to reduce how much space it takes up in the garage.

We do want to point out that you’re getting a 5 year limited warranty with your purchase, which just might come in handy. However, the issues you’ll experience with the mower have nothing to do with the actual tool, usually only involving the battery (that you purchased separately) and the ability of the mower to perform well in high grass.

Specs

  • Battery-powered (56V)
  • 3-in-1 discharge
  • 21 inches
  • Rear-wheel-drive (RWD)
  • 68 pounds
Pros:
  • 5 year limited warranty included
  • Comes with LED headlights and weather-resistant design for optimal use in all conditions
  • Quiet brushless motor
  • 60 minutes of runtime is a lot better than most models
Cons:
  • You have to buy the battery and the charger separately

Self Propelled Lawn Mowers Buyer’s Guide

Since you’re going to be spending a decent chunk of change on a self-propelled lawn mower, you don’t want to just buy the first one you see on Amazon. So, we’re going to break down everything you need to know about self-propelled lawn mowers to help you decide on a product.

Best Push Mower
Best Push Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide

Cut Capacity (Size)

The cut capacity, also known as the actual size of the mower, is going to determine how long it takes you to actually cut your lawn. This usually describes how wide the lawn mower is. The wider the lawn mower, the more of your lawn you can cut at once (i.e. A 20-inch mower will cut in 20-inch strips, etc.)

Some lawn mowers are as narrow as 19 to 21 inches, which is perfect for a smaller yard, but still a little small. If you live on ¼ acre or more, you definitely want to go a little larger. Some lawn mowers are around 28 inches, which makes mowing your lawn much more efficient.

For the most part, you’ll see that self-propelled mowers usually come in a 21-inch size, which should be good for most lawns. You might have to step up to a push mower or ride-on mower if you have a larger yard.

Battery vs. Gas

A lot of self-propelled lawn mowers run on battery systems, usually lithium-ion. With lithium-ion batteries ranging from 20V to around 80V, you can figure out just how powerful your self-propelled lawn mower really is.

Once you’re done mowing your lawn, you can easily hook your lawn mower’s batter up to the rapid charger, which usually can charge fully in a span of 30 to 60 minutes (depends on the type of battery).

What you do have to look out for when it comes to the batteries of self-propelled lawn mowers is the actual run time. It wouldn’t make that much sense to buy a mower that supports up to 45 minutes of runtime if your lawn normally takes two hours to cut.

NOTE: Not all battery-powered self-propelled lawn mowers actually come with the battery or charger, so consider that before you make your purchase. The lawn mower might be at a decent price right now, but a battery and charger will be additional costs.

There are also old-school gas-powered self-propelled lawn mowers too. This might be a better solution for a larger yard since you can easily just fill the tank with a little more gas and continue cutting like usual. You don’t need to take a break to charge the battery!

The issue is that gas-powered motors tend to be a little louder than battery-powered, so be wary of the noise factor before choosing a mower.

Drive System

Just like vehicles, self-propelled lawn mowers also run on drive systems, such as front-wheel and rear-wheel drives. Each drive system has its own benefits, so let’s go over how each benefits your mowing experience.

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD). These types of mowers are ideal if your lawn is generally flat. That’s because the mower will suddenly stop moving if the front wheels are lifted off the ground, which tends to happen when navigating hills. For the most part, they are much easier to tip and turn when it’s time to turn around and reverse course
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD). These types of mowers are much more powerful and are better if you have a lawn with hills. They have an incredible amount of traction and require much less intervention

So, which is best for you? Front-wheel-drive is perfect for the flat lawn while the rear-wheel-drive is better if you have a lawn with hills. It’s that simple! For even more control, all-wheel-drive systems are also available.

What’s really cool is that some mowers come with adjustable drive systems, meaning you can switch between AWD, FWD, or RWD as it suits your cutting needs.

Height Adjustment

The height adjustment of a lawn mower describes how high above the ground your lawn mower will cut. The higher the height is set, the longer your grass will be after you’ve cut it. All you need to do to adjust the height is to pull the height adjustment lever and set it to your ideal height.

Not all self-propelled lawn mowers have the same height adjustment options. Some have only two options, some have seven, and some range from 1.25 to 4 inches.

You know how long you like your lawn, right? So, figure out how long you’d like your grass to be after being cut and make sure your self-propelled lawn mower is within that range.

Small Riding Lawn Mower
Best Small Riding Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide

Speed Systems

A lot of self-propelled lawn mowers run at a consistent speed, allowing for a more even cut. Yet, if your lawn is a bit thicker than usual, a fast speed lawn mower might not cut the lawn the way you were hoping.

Variable speed lawn mowers allow you to have full control of the speed, allowing you to shift the speed up or down depending on how even the terrain is or the thickness of the grass.

It all comes down to personal preference, but variable speed might be a better choice if you have a lawn with uneven terrain or thicker grass. You can adjust the speed at certain areas of your cut and achieve a more even cut overall.

Warranties

When you’re spending hundreds (sometimes over $600) on a self-propelled lawn mower, you want to make sure that you’re getting a product that works, and for a long period of time. It’s always a good idea to check that your lawn mower has some type of warranty.

So, what’s in a good warranty? Well, given the money you’re spending, a good warranty will last several years. It’ll cover parts and repairs and make the amount of money you’re shelling out even more worth it.

Even though you don’t need a warranty, it’s always good to have in case the product suddenly breaks or stops working. So, lean toward self-propelled lawn mowers with a warranty, if at all possible.

Remember: Since a lot of battery-powered mowers don’t come with a battery or charger, those additional pieces won’t come with the mower’s warranty. If those break or become damage, it’s on you to fix or repair.

Electric vs Gas Lawn Mowers:
Lawn Mowers
Best Small Riding Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide: Which Is Best?

Discharge

The discharge of a lawn mower describes how the grass leaves the mower once it’s been cut. For the most part, you have a side, rear bag, or mulch discharge. If you’re not sure which is best for you or if your preferences vary, there are 3-in-1 self-propelled lawn mowers that give you the option for all three.

Both bagless discharge systems will allow you to power through an entire lawn cutting without having to stop to empty the bag. The issue is that they cause a build-up of cut grass on your lawn, which can eventually begin to decay or negatively impact your lawn’s health.

Bagged discharge works to collect the grass you’ve cut into the rear bag, meaning you don’t have to worry about raking up the clippings later on. The downside is that you have to occasionally stop to empty the bag when it becomes full.

Weight

Even though you won’t have to manually be pushing your self-propelled lawn mower to get your lawn trimmed, you still need to maneuver it here and there. That’s especially the case when you need to tip it up and turn around.

Since self-propelled lawn mowers are a little heftier due to their motors, they’re most likely going to be a lot heavier than your usual push mower. You’re looking at anywhere between 60 and 90 pounds for most self-propelled mowers.

The heavier it is, the more difficult it’ll be to maneuver it up a hill or turn it around. So, consider your physical strength and how much effort you’re willing to put into your lawn mowing.

Self Propelled Lawn Mowers FAQ

You’ve got questions….we’ve got answers! Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions about self-propelled lawn mowers and what we have to say about them!

Is a self-propelled lawn mower worth it?

That really depends on how your property is structured. If you have a large property or a property full of hills and divets, getting a self-propelled lawn mower can greatly reduce the time and effort it takes to cut your lawn. For small and flat yards, the price might be a bit much.

What are the benefits of a self-propelled lawn mower?

The greatest benefit of the self-propelled lawn mower is how little effort you have to put into using it. Since all you have to do is squeeze the bar near the handle, you no longer have to strain yourself to push your lawn mower across the yard and/or up hills for several hours.

What makes a self-propelled lawn mower better than a push mower?

Though push powers are seen as the norm and are much cheaper, they take a lot out of you. Pushing a push power can be extremely tiring, especially when it comes to thick grass and hills. The more tired you get, the slower you go and the longer your lawn mowing takes.

Will pushing a self-propelled mower damage it?

You can, but it won’t really do you any good. Since it weighs a bit more than a regular push mower (due to the battery and other added electrical features), it’ll probably take a ton more effort. There’s no real risk of damage, but it’s just not easy!

How do you mow with a self-propelled lawn mower?

Squeeze the bar that’s near the handle of the lawn mower and hold on as the lawn mower begins driving itself. Make sure you’re helping to guide the lawn mower to keep it in a straight line and cutting evenly.

Conclusion

Not every property needs a self-propelled lawn mower, but it’s a really good idea if you have a huge or hilly yard. You can greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to cut your lawn and save yourself some physical energy along the way

At the end of the day, you know what you’re looking for in a lawn mower. You generally know how long it takes to cut your lawn, how high you want your grass to be, and how you like the cut grass to be discharged.

Take all of these things into account when choosing a self-propelled lawn mower, but be extra careful about the product you choose. Since you’re spending a lot of money, you want to choose a lawn mower that’ll last you for years, not months.

The powerful electric motor also allows for spot-mowing of areas of your lawn with longer grass. The robot can maneuver in and out of tight spots easily, with zero-turn functionality.

You program the robot using the intuitive programming menu on the large LCD. The user-friendly navigation of the system allows for easy setup, and you can set it to mow as often as you like.

The robot works off the same boundary-line system as all other Husqvarna models. With the 430X, you have the option of choosing a polar-white color scheme, and headlights. Although, we don’t see why this machine needs lights as its autonomous.

If the Automower starts running low on battery before it finishes your lawn, it returns to the docking station to recharge without any intervention. After completing the recharge, the mower picks up where it left off until it finishes the entire lawn.

Pros:
  • Suitable for gardens up to 0.8-acres

Husqvarna Automower 430XH Robotic Lawn Mower

We keep going with the Husqvarna robotic models. The 430XH is another full-sized model. However, it’s a slight step down from the 430X that wins the top premium choice in this review. This Automower model suits lawns up to 0.8-acres in size, making it an excellent choice for the largest suburban homes.

The machine features an adjustable cutting deck, allowing for the smooth cutting of grass between 2 to 3.6-inches in length. You get the same set-and-forget technology as the other Husky models, with control through the Connect@Home app.

This model works in the rain and uses the same run-quiet technology as the other Husky models. It’s a good choice for homeowners that need a full-size model at a reasonable price point. We still think we would rather have the 430X over this machine, but it’s all about your personal preference.

The anti-collision sensors ensure it never runs over animals or objects, and the tilt sensors stop the blades in seconds if anything or anyone lifts the machine. If the mower detects someone picking it up during its mowing session, it shuts down and sends a theft alarm to your mobile device through the app.

The 430XH has the same GPS tracking as the other Husky models, allowing you to track its location if someone steals it from your yard.

Pros:
  • Smart home capability connects to Alexa
  • Suitable for all weather mowing
  • Mows up to 0.8-acres
  • Cuts grass up to 3.4-inches in height
  • Anti-theft GPS tracking system onboard
Cons:
  • The 430X is the better choice if you want the top-of-the-range model
  • Installation kit sold separately

There are two bump sensors on the front of the mower. If they detect an object, the machine stops, reveres, and changes its course automatically, without any need for reprogramming. You get an anti-theft PIN code to lock the machine and prevent anyone from accessing it if they steal it from your yard.

We don’t know much about this brand, and we couldn’t find any information on warranties or dealer networks. While it’s a good robot, we think you’ll be better off with the Husqvarna 115H.

Pros:
  • Set up mowing schedules
  • Suitable for lawns up to 0.25-acres
  • Anti-theft with PIN code
  • Emergency stop
  • Bump sensors
  • Affordable
Cons:
  • Unknown brand quality

Robotic Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide

Purchasing a robotic lawn mower for your yard sounds like a great idea – no more spending your weekends pushing the mower around for hours and cleaning up the trimmings. With a robotic mower, you take the hassle out of your lawn maintenance.

In this buyer’s guide, we’re going to give you everything you need to know about choosing the best robotic lawn mower for your yard.

Maximum Cutting Area

Every robotic lawn mower comes with specifications for maximum lawn size (cutting area). When unboxing your machine, you’ll notice that it includes a boundary wire in the kit. This boundary wire nominates the cutting area, keeping the mower’s operation within these boundary lines.

Some machines come with expansion kits that allow you to increase the cutting area. Robotic lawnmowers aren’t suitable for large areas above 1-acre, as the battery life limits the machine’s run time to between 1 to 3.5-hours, depending on the model.

These machines are ideal for lawns up to 0.8-acres, making them an excellent choice for family homes with medium to larger yards. Most robot’s working range is between 0.25-acres to 0.8-acres in size. Choose the model that suits your lawn. If you purchase a model that’s too small for your yard, you won’t get a complete cut, and a model that’s too big is a waste of your money.

Positioning the Charging Station

Your robotic lawn mower comes with an automatic charging station. Your robot will return to the station by itself after completing its mowing function. There’s no need to hook it up to the charger yourself, which makes for true set-and-forget technology.

You program the robot, and it undocks from the station at the nominated mowing time, completes the job, and then returns to the docking station to charge for the next session.

You’ll need to set up the docking station near a power supply, and that should be in an area where the robot has access to your lawn. Setting it up in your garage is no good if you keep the garage door closed.

Make sure you set up the charging station on a flat surface close to the start point of your lawn. Ideally, you want a weatherproof location, keeping your Machine dry while it’s charging – remember, water and electricity don’t mix.

We recommend building or buying a mini-garage for your robotic lawnmower, sort of like a dog kennel for the machine. Fit it with an electrical outlet and have a professional electrician connect it up to your home’s power supply.

Batteries

When selecting your robotic lawn mower, make sure you check the battery type before you purchase. You want a robotic lawn mower that uses a lithium-ion battery pack. These batteries offer you the most extended service life for your robot, giving you more run time for the machine.

Older or cheaper models may include lead-acid batteries. While a lead-acid battery works, it doesn’t have anywhere near the same capacity as a lithium-ion battery pack. Lithium-ion batteries allow for more charging cycles than lead-acid types, providing a longer service life for the battery, and your mower.

Run Time and Battery Charging

The run time of your machine will vary, depending on the model. Most robotic lawnmowers offer runtimes of between one and 2.5-hours. The run time of the device plays a significant role in choosing your preferred model.

The run time of the robot is dependent on the battery pack capacity, and the power consumption of the machine. Manufacturer’s match the two factors. They produce a mower that operates efficiently around your yard, with enough run time to cut your lawn.

However, as lithium-ion battery packs age with service, they start to lose capacity. If you were getting 2-hours of run time out of your robot when you first use it, you could expect only 80% of that capacity after a few years of running the machine.

As a result of this decrease in battery life, you might have to change the battery pack every three to five years.

Noise Levels

Have you ever decided to get an early start on your weekend chores? You head out into the yard, set up and gas the mower, and then start it up. About 10-minutes later, your neighbor arrives on your lawn in their pajamas, with a sour scowl on their face. You woke them up, and they aren’t happy.

Most gas-powered lawnmowers operate at noise levels between 80 to 85dB. That’s just on the borderline of what it takes to start causing hearing damage. Your neighbors are sure to hear your lawnmower, and if it’s early in the morning, you can bet they’ll complain.

A robotic lawn mower operates on an electric motor, and it runs near silent. You can set your robot to start mowing your lawn at 3 am, it when you wake up, you’ll have freshly cut grass, and the machine’s noise won’t disturb your sleep or drive your neighbors crazy.

The average robotic lawnmower operates at noise levels between 55 to 65dB, making it far quieter than a gas-powered or full-size electric mower.

Cutting Deck Width

The cutting deck refers to the coverage of the cutting blades during operation. Look for a machine where the cutting width is as wide as possible. The wider the cutting deck, the fewer passes the robot needs to make to cut your lawn. As a result, you get more run time and better efficiency out of your robot.

However, bigger is not always better. A larger cutting deck might not be the best choice for smaller gardens with tight spaces. Remember to clean the cutting deck once a week to make sure your blades are clean and undamaged.

Cutting Height and Adjustable Cutting Deck

Most robotic lawn mowers come with adjustable cutting decks, allowing the robot to change the cutting height automatically. The robot features sensors that detect the distance from the cutting deck to the soil surface. Most robots will later the height of the cutting deck when it must traverse bumps and dips in your lawn.

The maximum cutting height of the machine determines the height of the grass you can mow. Robotic lawn mowers are not suitable for cutting long grass. If your lawn is over 3-inches in height, you’ll have to cut it with a regular lawnmower first, and then set up your robot to take care of weekly maintenance going forward.

Robotic Lawn Mower

Maximum Operating Slope

If your yard has a slope in the lawn, you’ll need a robot that’s capable of climbing. Measure the largest slope in your garden, and make sure that the robot can operate effectively in your yard. The last thing you need is a robot that can’t climb, wasting your time and money.

Weight

The weight of your robotic lawnmower isn’t significant since you don’t have to push it around your yard. Most robots weight less than 20-lbs, making them easy to pick up and move around.

Robot Size and Cutting Range

The most important factors regarding choosing your robotic lawnmower are the size, capacity, and range. If you have a small garden, make sure you choose a model that can get into tight corners. Look for models with three wheels that offer zero-turn functionality.

The cutting range is vital, and if you select a model that can’t cut your entire lawn in one session, you’ll either buy an extension pack or finish the rest manually with your lawnmower.

Safety Features and Sensors

Robotic lawnmowers work autonomously. That means that you input your required settings and leave the robot to do its thing. However, since it’s a robot, it only does what it’s programming tells it to do. Therefore, you need to ensure you select a model that comes with built-in safety features.

What if your robot runs over kids’ toys lying on the lawn? What if it encounters animals or other objects in its way? Fortunately, the manufacturer’s thought of that ahead of time. All robotic models in these review feature sensors that detect the lifting or tilting of the cutting deck, stopping the blades in a fraction of a second.

The integrated sensors for obstacle detection let the machine know when it encounters an immovable object. When the robot detects a rock or tree, it will back off and adjust its path to keep it on track. Other models also include rain or slope sensors, and others feature theft alarms with PIN code protection.

If someone decides to steal your mower while you’re not at home, the system notifies your smartphone, telling you that someone is tampering with the mower. Some models also include GPS tracking, like LoJack for your robotic mower.

If you consider the price tag of these machines, it’s an excellent security feature.

Additional Functionality

If you want a mower that can handle your front and back yard on different mowing sessions, look for a model that offers multi-zone mowing. Mowers designed for larger yards may feature GPS navigation that links to Bluetooth and your home Wi-Fi setup.

Apps and Smart Home Compatibility

As mentioned, some of these models feature smart applications that connect to your home Wi-Fi system. The Husqvarna models link to Alexa, allowing you to control or track your mower with a simple voice command.

Some models hook up to apps that allow you to track your mower’s status at any time. Sure, smart functionality is not always necessary, but handling your mowing tasks is so much easier.

Maintenance and General Cleaning

Robotic lawnmowers are low-maintenance machines. However, you’ll need to give your mower a checkup once every week to make sure the cutting deck is clean. Some models are waterproof, and you can rinse out the cutting deck with your garden hose.

After a year or two of use, you might notice that the grass starts to show cutting fringes, making the lawn look tatty after a mow. This feathering is a sign of the blades going dull, and you’ll have to sharpen them at a dealer.

We recommend you take your mower to an authorized service agent for sharpening or replacement of the mower blades.

Small Riding Lawn Mower
Best Small Riding Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide

Pricing – Affordable Isn’t Always Better

A standard electric model lawn mower will cost you a few hundred dollars for a good machine that lasts for years. However, a robotic lawnmower could set you back as much as $2,500, depending on the model you buy.

As with everything in life, we often make the mistake of thinking that the more expensive the machine, the better the performance. That’s not always the case with robotic lawnmowers. Purchasing a top-end premium model might not be necessary if you have a smaller yard.

The difference between a robot that can cut 0.8-acres, and one that cuts 0.25-acres – is thousands of dollars on the price tag. Focus on choosing a model that has the coverage you need, rather than the price.

Wheels and Casters

Your robotic lawn mower comes with three to four wheels. Most models will have two larger wheels in the rear, with two smaller casters in the front. Others have the larger wheels in the front, while some models feature two large rear wheels, with a single caster at the front.

The smaller wheels at the front of the machine provide your mower with zero-turn functionality. The mower can spin on its axis without needing to draw its turning access as a result of this wheel setup. This feature is especially crucial for lawns with tight corners, allowing the robot the back out and turn around.

Look for models that feature tread on the larger wheels. The tread provides the machine with traction, allowing it to climb slopes on wet grass without slipping.

Best Push Mower
Best Push Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide

Scheduling Software

Most robotic mowers come with a software setup that allows for customizable programming of your cutting times. With this feature, you can set up exactly when you want your mower to operate. We like setting up the robot to cut at night.

With this strategy, you always have a clean-cut lawn, and no-one will ever see you mowing. Don’t be surprised if your neighbor asks you how you manage to pull off such a good-looking garden without ever mowing.

Some models allow up to 7 to 10 programmable sessions per week. Send the robot out to trim your lawn every third day, and you’ll always have a neat yard with freshly cut grass.

Cutting Path and Cutting System

When choosing your preferred robotic lawn mower, make sure you look at the machine’s cutting pattern and path. Some models move back and forth, systematically cutting your lawn in straight lines. However, this functionality can end up drawing track lines from the machine.

The Husqvarna range of mowers operates in a randomized cutting path, preventing the appearance of track lines on your lawn.

Collection Bags

You don’t get a collection bag with your robotic mower. You might be wondering why, and the answer is simple. The design of the robot allows you to trim your lawn two or three times a week. As a result of the cutting frequency, your yard never gets long, requiring the use of a collection bag.

Instead, the robot trims a half an inch or less off the top of your grass with each cutting session. The machine expels the trimmings, where they dry and blow away with the wind. Think about that, no more tossing away the trimmings or raking the lawn after you finish mowing.

Robot Lawn Mower FAQs

Choosing the right robotic lawn mower for your yard is no easy task; there are many components to consider before you buy. Look through these frequently asked questions for more insight into selecting the right robotic mower for your yard.

Will my robot lawn mower destroy my flowerbeds?

Robotic lawnmowers only cut to the specified boundary area set by the inductive boundary cable. Therefore, your mower won’t destroy your flowerbeds, as it stays contained within the working area.

Can a robot lawn mower handle uneven surfaces and debris on the lawn?

Your robotic lawn mower can run over smaller garden debris like acorns and small branches without any hassle. However, if you have a storm in your yard the day before you mow, check that there is no heavy debris lying on the lawn before you send the robot out to mow.

The robot features sensors that detect the surface level, adjusting the cutting deck for a consistent cut on your lawn.

How do I charge the robot?

It’s simple – you don’t. The mower will return to its docking station after finishing its scheduled mowing. You schedule its duty and then walk away. You never have to worry about trimming your lawn, which looks great at any time during the week.

How often do you have to service the machine?

As with conventional mowers, robotic models require you to service them periodically. Husqvarna agents are your best option if you’re using this model. For the other mentioned in this review, you’ll have to check for service agents in your area.

Is a robotic lawn mower silent?

Robotic lawn mowers make a fraction of the noise compared to gasoline models, producing no emissions. Most gas-powered lawnmowers produce sound up to 85dB. With a robotic model, you get noise levels of around 50 to 54dB. They run near-silent, and your neighbors will never complain, even if your robot works at night.

The Best Robotic Lawn Mower – The Verdict

By now, you should have a good idea of the best robotic lawn mower for your yard. We recommend that you pick a model with a solid reputation and brand behind the mower. That’s why we advise you to invest in a Husqvarna model.

Husky makes some of the best gardening machines available, and this Swedish company has a trusted track record. If you’re going to buy a robotic lawnmower and lay out thousands of dollars for the machine, we recommend you go with a reputable and trustworthy brand – and you can’t go wrong with a Husky.

These machines come with a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects, but we doubt you’ll have any problems with your mower, provided you maintain it from season-to-season.

Our top three picks for this review are top-quality models and the best in the Husqvarna range. The 310 is an excellent choice for medium to large yards, while the 430X is the flagship model that’s suitable for cutting lawns up to 0.8-acres.

If you’re looking for a budget model, the 115H is a fantastic choice, with most of the functions you find on the premium Husky models. The Husqvarna Automower range is the best you get, and if you’re going to spend money on this machine, we’re sure you’ll love the performance.

Have you ever owned an electric lawnmower? When they first came onto the market, everyone wanted to trade in their gas-powered lawnmower for an electric model.

However, for those unfortunate gardeners that did purchase an electric mower, they quickly discovered it was the wrong move. Back in the day, electric mowers were full of faults. The underpowered motors couldn’t compete with the grass-cutting efficiency of a gas-powered mower.

Fortunately, two or three decades later, manufacturers ironed out these issues, and now electrical lawnmowers are a viable option for cutting your grass. Still not convinced? We put together this article to compare gas-powered lawnmowers against their electrical rivals.

Perhaps, by the end of this read, you might have a different opinion about your lawnmower of choice.

Electric vs Gas Lawn Mowers

When comparing lawnmowers, we need to take into account three models, gas-powered, electric, and battery-operated.

  • Gas-powered mowers – These models require gasoline for operation.
  • Electric mowers – These models have an electrical cable that supplies power to the mower.
  • Battery-powered mowers – These models run off an electric battery that you charge after use.

Each of these models has its benefits and drawbacks. Understanding how they operate gives you further insight on which model is right for your gardening style and your yard.

Our Mower Reviews

Lawnmower Considerations

When deciding between gas-powered and electrical lawnmowers, you need to think about your requirements. There is no right or wrong choice when purchasing a lawnmower, but one model may suit your yard more than the others.

Let’s look at the factors we need to consider about lawnmowers before we make a purchase decision.

Types of Lawn Mowers

Motor Power

Your lawnmowers power output should be the first thing you look at when comparing models. If you live on a large property, and you’re dealing with stones, bumps, and tough sprigs of grass, then a gas-powered motor is your best option. Gas-powered lawnmowers have the highest power output, and they eat through the grass without any issues.

On the other hand, and electrical mower might not be able to handle this type of lawn. The stones may damage the blades of the electrical components, or put too much strain on the electric motor during operation. As a result, your lawnmowers motor might burn out after a few months of service.

Battery-powered options have a similar problem. While they work well on manicured lawns, taking them onto rougher ground presents a problem.

Gas-powered lawnmowers measure motor output in horsepower and cubic centimeters. However, the most critical rating of your lawnmower’s engine is the torque. Gas-powered motors have an average power output of between 4.50 and 8.75 ft-lbs.

Battery-powered and electric mowers don’t have a torque rating. Therefore, we need to do a calculation to understand the output of the motor. If your engine has a power rating of 1,000-watts, and an RPM of 2,800, we can assume that the mower has a torque rating of approximately 2.5 lb-ft. This figure is only a third or less of what a gas-powered mower has onboard.

Operation

When comparing the operation of the three lawnmower models, we need to consider two primary factors – the weight of the machine, as well as ease of use and maneuverability.

Consider how you’ll use the mower, and ask yourself if an electrical cord will get in the way of the mower. Running over your electrical cord means that you’ll have to replace the cable.

Lawnmower Runtime

IF you want a lawnmower with the longest possible runtime, then an electrical model is your best option. As long as you have power, you can cut your lawn. However, if you have a blackout in your neighborhood, you won’t be able to cut the grass today.

A battery-powered electrical model may save you in this situation. With the battery charged to capacity, you should get enough runtime to cut your lawn, as long as you have an average-sized yard. However, what if you forget to charge the mower after your last use? What if you didn’t connect the charger properly and it’s dead?

Electric Lawn Mowers
Electric Lawn Mowers

A gas-powered mower relied on the capacity of its fuel tank in determining runtime. Most lawn mowers come with a 1-gallon gas tank that’s sufficient to mow a sizeable family-sized lawn in a single-family home.

If you run out of gas, you can always refill the tank. However, you’ll also need to add oil to the fuel. The 2-stroke motor relies on the oil for efficient operation and smooth moving of the engine parts.

Economy and Eco-Friendly Features

When it comes to economy and eco-friendly characteristics, you can’t beat an electrical lawnmower. Whether you’re using a battery-powered or cord-based model, electric models are the most inexpensive to run, reducing your carbon footprint.

Gas-powered models spit out exhaust fumes into the air. Not only can they make you feel nauseous, but they’re terrible for the environment as well. Gas costs money, and with prices at the pump starting to rise, the cost of mowing your lawn will continue to increase.
Pricing

If you’re looking for the most affordable lawnmower model, then you’ll have to go with the corded electrical type. Battery-powered mowers are slightly more expensive, due to the inclusion of a lithium-ion battery pack that increases the cost of the unit.

You can pick up a battery-powered lawnmower for around the same costs as a mid-level gas-powered model.

Operating Costs

When it comes to operating costs, the electrical models are far cheaper to run. Gas-powered mowers require gas which is more expensive than electricity. The maintenance costs on the motor are also a concern for anyone looking to save money on their gardening budget.

Unpacking the Types of Lawnmowers

Let’s take a deeper dive into each of the three models in this review. We’ll list the pros and cons of each model to give you further insight on each type.

Electric Lawnmower Pros

  • Easy Maintenance – The best part about electric models is that they require very little maintenance. All you need to do is keep the blades sharp and the undercarriage of the mower free of debris.
  • Infinite Run Time – As long as you have power coming into your home, your electric lawnmower is ready to go. There’s no fuel required, and no battery pack to charge, and an electric lawnmower is a plug-and-play option.
  • Lightweight and Easy to Move – Electric lawnmowers using a cable power supply are very light. You can move them around without any hassle.

GreenWorks Electric Lawn Mower, Rated one of the Best

Electric Lawnmower Cons

  • The Cable – The electrical cable is a hassle. You’ll have to continually move it during operation to ensure your lawnmower doesn’t cut the cord.
  • Not Suitable for Wet Lawns – Don’t bother trying to mow your lawn when it’s wet. The motor is too weak to deal with damp grass, and you’ll end up overloading the mower, resulting in a breakdown.

Battery-Powered Electric Lawnmowers Pros

  • No Gasoline Required – With this model, there’s no need for cables or gasoline.
  • Easy Maintenance – There are no spark plugs to change, no carburetor to clean, and no cables are lying around your yard.
  • Smooth Operation – While they might not be as light as electric mowers that use a cable, they are stiller easier to maneuver than gas-powered models.

Greenworks Cordless Mower, Again rated one of the Best

Battery-Powered Electric Lawnmowers Pros

  • Replacing the Batteries – Eventually, your battery will reach the end of its service life and require replacement. In most cases, your battery will die after two to three years of use. Battery-powered electric lawnmowers use lithium-ion battery cells that cost a fortune. When you replace the battery, the price tag might give you a shock.
  • Less Runtime – Battery-powered lawnmowers offer less runtime than electric mowers with cables or gas-powered lawnmowers. With most models, you’ll get a maximum of 30 to 60-minutes of runtime, which is not ideal if you have a large yard.
  • Extended Charging Times – Lithium-ion batteries take forever to charge. In most cases, it may take 12-hours or longer for the battery to reach full charge. If you forget to fit the charger after you store away your mower, then it could derail your gardening plans the following week.
  • Not Suitable for Wet Lawns – Similar to electric models with a cable, the motor in these lawnmowers has a low power rating. Therefore, you’ll strain the motor when cutting wet grass, and the moisture may also affect the electrical components as well.
  • No Battery Standardization – The biggest issue with battery-powered mowers is that there’s no battery standardization. As a result, most brands make a specialized battery pack that’s not interchangeable between makes or models.

Gas-Powered Lawnmowers Pros

  • Plenty of Power – A gas-powered lawnmower will cut any type of grass, in any working conditions. When you start up the mower and get moving, it effortlessly slices through the toughest grasses. Even cheaper models typically have robust motors that are capable of handling any lawn.
  • Good Run Time – Gas-powered lawn mowers come in a range of models. For the larger units, you’ll get gas tanks that can hold up to 2-gallons of fuel. However, most models have a 1-gallon fuel capacity. That gives you enough fuel to mow a decent-sized lawn.
  • Durable and Robust – Gas-powered lawnmowers are far more durable than electric models. The powerful motor makes short work of long grass, and it can run for hours without breaking a sweat. Compared to electric models, you get more grass-cutting for your dollar, and you won’t have to go over any areas twice.
  • Suitable for Use on a Wet Lawn – Wet lawns stand no chance against a gas-powered lawnmower. The high-torque motor slices through grass effortlessly, for hours on end.

Craftsman, One of the best gas powered mowers

Gas-Powered Lawnmowers Cons

  • Runtime – Gas eventually runs out, and you’ll need to have some extra at home in case you don’t manage to finish the lawn on a single tank. Gas-powered lawnmowers also require you to mix oil in with the fuel to lubricate the working parts in the motor and prevent damage during operation.
  • Maintenance-Heavy – Gas-powered motors require regular servicing to ensure they are in running order. Service centers may also charge you for any replacement parts as well. Some of the working parts in your lawnmower that need regular servicing are;
The barrel, rings, and pistons, The fuel filter, The fuel line, The carburetor, Blades and drive shafts.
  • Increased Danger Risk – A gas-powered model spins the blades at higher speeds than electrical models. Therefore, you’ll need to wear protective eyeglasses to avoid stone chips and grass getting in your eyes. The fuel also presents a fire hazard as well.
  • Heavy – Most gas-powered lawnmowers come with cast-iron motors. As a result of the weight of the material used in the design of the engine, these models are heavy and hard to turn.
  • Challenging to Start – Most gas-powered lawnmowers require starting with a ripcord. If the sparkplugs are wet or old, then it may take you more than a few pulls to start it up.

In Closing – Don’t Listen to Sales Reps

When selecting the ideal lawnmower for your yard, it’s vital that you look at how you’ll be using the mower. If you have a small backyard with manicured grass, then an electrical model will be more than sufficient to cut your grass.

However, if you live on a large property or estate, then a gas-powered model is your best bet. If you need advice on which model is the right choice for your yard, visit a garden center. Ask the consultants what they would recommend for your garden.

Avoid going to a lawnmower dealership if you have no idea about how lawnmowers work or what you need out of the machine. Lawnmower dealerships may entice you into buying a model that has more power than you need. Sales reps are always looking to upsell you to a more expensive model, so don’t fall for this unethical sales practice.

Spend some time looking through suitable models online. This strategy will give you an unbiased viewpoint of which type of lawnmower is best for your application. After researching what’s available, narrow your choice down to two or three models, and then visit the lawnmower dealership.

When the sales rep sees that you know what you are looking at, there is less chance of them trying to take you for a ride.

Reel Mower Buyer’s Guide

After reading through our reviews of the best reel mowers, you’re probably wondering which model is the right choice for your lawn.

If you’re having issues settling on a reel mower, this section is for you. Let’s unpack the differences between traditional and reel lawnmowers, giving you everything you need to look for in a prospective model.

Best Cordless Lawn Mower
Best Cordless Lawn Mower Reviews: Complete Buyer’s Guide

What Is a Reel Mower?

A reel mower is a traditional mower design used in the very first models. These mowers don’t have a motor, and they rely on manual pushing power to move them around the lawn.

The mower comes with a reel attached to driveshafts on the wheels. As you push the mower, the driveshafts turn the cutting reel, spinning the blades. As a result, it’s more effort to push a reel mower than an engine or battery model. However, you get a better cut for your lawn.

Most gardeners agree that reel mower provides a superior visual effect for your freshly cut lawn. When you’re using your reel mower, you’re cutting the grass cleanly. With a motor-type lawnmower, the cutting blades create a vacuum pulling the blades or gars towards the mower. When the blades cut the grass, it results in a torn look, thanks to the blades’ flat rotary spinning motion and the cutting deck’s suction.

With a reel mower, the blades spin from an overhead rotary position, and there’s no suction effect. Therefore, the cutting reel trims the grass at its natural standing height. The result of this mowing method means you get an even cut across the grass canopy, providing a cleaner look for your lawn.

Reel mowers come with five to seven blades on the reel. The increase in blades over a motor-powered model means you get a finer cut on your grass, giving your lawn a relaxed look after you finish mowing.

However, there’s an issue with reel mowers – The pushing. Pushing your lawnmower around isn’t a lot of fun. Sure, you’re keeping fit, but no-one wants to start sweating in the hot sun. If you’re using a reel mower, make sure you cut your lawn in the morning before the sun gets too hot.

Another drawback of using a reel mower is the cutting height of the deck. If you go away on vacation for a few weeks and leave your lawn unattended, it will be a bit wild when you return home. However, you might find it challenging to cut grass over 4-inches in length using a reel mower.

The longer the grass, the more friction it causes in the cutting reel. As a result, it makes it harder to push the mower.

How Do Reel Mowers Work?

Reel mowers work by using a ball-bearing system attached to a spinning cutting deck featuring multiple cutting blades. The blades have a tapered and swirled design, allowing for the easy removal of grass towards the machine’s rear.

What makes a reel mower different to your standard electric or gas-powered mower is its cutting action. The traditional engine-style mower creates a vortex under the cutting deck as it spins. As the suction lifts the grass, the blades cut it in a circular motion from the side. This cutting angle tears the blades of grass, rather than severing them.

As a result, if you look at the two cuts from the machines under a microscope, the reel mower produces a clean cut that you would expect- like a knife cutting through butter. However, the engine lawnmower produces a ragged cut on the grass.

This difference might seem insignificant. However, it plays a role when you look at your lawn. A reel mower produces that clean-cut look like you see on soccer fields. However, the engine mower gives the grass a rougher look. Reel mowers are ideal for cutting manicured and presentation lawns at hotels or other estates.

You’ll have to push your mower to create the energy needed to drive the cutting deck. However, most modern models have gear-assisted pushing, making them much more efficient than the first reel- mower models.

Asa trade-off for the work of pushing the mower, you get an eco-friendly operation. The mower makes next to no noise, and you don’t need fuel or electricity to operate it. With a reel mower, you save money on your garden maintenance while reducing your home’s carbon footprint.

What are the Design Features of Reel Mowers?

Reel mowers are a throwback to the first lawnmower designs. Edwin Beard Budding, from Gloucestershire, England, received the first reel mower patent in 1830, and the overall look and design of the mower haven’t changed much in 200-years.

However, thanks to innovations in material technology and engineering, today’s reel mowers are lighter, more effective, and more energy-efficient. They don’t require half the effort to push as the original reel mowers, and most of them are as easy to push as a traditional engine-powered mower.

When selecting your ideal reel mower, look for the following features.

Blade Cutting Deck and Height

When checking out a prospective model, we recommend starting your assessment with the cutting deck width and height. The cutting deck refers to the setup containing the blade reel. The length of the blades from one side of the mower to the other represents the cutting deck width.

Reel mowers come in a range of cutting deck widths. The smallest models have decks at 8″ widths, while the largest models can have decks up to 24″. The wider the deck, the more challenging it’s going to be to create the inertia and energy required to move the mower forward.

If you’re mowing longer grass or wet grass, the additional friction created might make it two or three times more challenging to push your reel mower. For smaller lawns in complexes and townhouses, we recommend cutting decks under 10″. Homeowners with mid-sized to larger gardens will do better with models featuring cutting deck between 16″ to 22″ in width.

The cutting deck height is also important. Most models feature an adjustable cutting height. You have the option of selecting three to nine cutting heights, depending on the model.

There should be two rollers on the rear of the machine that keep the cutting deck level during use. These rollers also create the drive for the cutting deck. The rollers should offer consistent operation, regardless of the cutting height selected on the machine.

Number of Cutting Blades

Manufacturers produce reel mowers in a variety of designs. The cutting deck of the machine features the blade reel. Most manufacturers design and construct the blades using coated carbon steel for strength, and the coating prevents rust and reduces friction when mowing the lawn.

It’s common for reel mowers to come with cutting reels featuring five or seven blades. The more blades the mower has, the finer the mowing action. Therefore, mowers featuring seven blades typically offer a finer cut and better aesthetic for your lawn.

The revolutions of the cutting deck also play a roll in the clean-cut of your lawn. You could have a seven-blade reel mower, but if the blades spin slowly, it’s going to influence the look of your lawn. Choose a model with as many blades as possible and a high revolution count for the cutting reel.

The Durability of the Blades

The durability of your cutting reel is important. If the blades on the reel get dull or start to rust, it’s going to affect the look of your finished lawn. Make sure you’re buying a mower with a coated carbon steel cutting reel or a stainless steel model.

Large Wheels and handles

The wheels on the machine determine its capability in handling rough terrain. However, with a reel mower, large wheels make it easier to push the machine, reducing friction.

Some models feature ergonomic handles with rubber grips for total control over the machine. Padded grips are great for reducing operator fatigue in your arms when using the mower. Look for adjustable and collapsible handles. Collapsible models make it easy to store the machine away in the shed or garage.

Grass Collection

Some models come with grass collection bins attached to the rear of the mower. This accessory is a great feature if you don’t want to spend time raking up the grass. However, a grass collector is not always necessary for reel mowers.

With reel mowers, you need to mow your lawn frequently. If you let the grass get long, you’re going to have a hard time mowing it. The extra length in the grass adds more friction and more energy required to move the mower.

Therefore, you never want your grass getting over 4-inches. Longer than 4″ results in a difficult mowing session. If you always keep your grass short, you’re not going to have much trimmings after you finish mowing., Leaving the trimmings on the lawn is fine. They dry out in a few days and blow away with the wind.

Weight and Size

The weight and size of your reel mower also make a difference in its performance. As mentioned, most models are manual machines. Therefore, you need to do the work of pushing them around your lawn. Choose models featuring design and construction with strong, lightweight materials.

The lighter the mower, the easier it is to push. The smaller the mower, the lighter the design – you get the idea.

Price Tag

When purchasing your ideal reel mower, you need to create a budget and stick to it. There are models in this review ranging from as little as $60 to $200. Setting a budget and sticking to it ensures you don’t overspend on a model you don’t need.

However, after purchasing your mower, you’ll never have to worry about buying fuel or spending money on maintaining a motor. These savings offset the cost of your mower, and the thing practically pays for itself after a few years.

How Do I Maintain My Reel Mower?

There’s next to no maintenance on a reel mower. You need to ensure that the blades dry out after mowing your lawn if it’s wet out. However, every other month, a spray of some multi-purpose lubricant is all you need to keep your reel mower in working order.

There are no oil changes, no need for new spark plugs, or clearing carburetor jets. The only maintenance required on your reel mower is to sharpen the blades every other year or so.

How Do I Sharpen Reel Mower Blades?

Maintain a sharp cutting reel is the only work involved with keeping your mower in working order. Even soft grass dulls blades after enough use, and you’ll need to keep them sharp for the best cutting action. We don’t recommend sharpening the blades yourself unless you have previous handy skills working with these tools.

Take your mower to a service agent dealing in lawnmowers. They’ll put a new edge on the cutting blades, making them as good as new. Trying to sharpen the blades yourself could end up damaging the machine – get a professional to help.

Reel Mower FAQs

Are reel mowers better than traditional mowers?

Most gardeners agree that reel mowers provide a cleaner cut and better finish for your lawn. The visual aesthetic is appealing, and it’s a must-have tool for any manicured lawn. Traditional gas-powered or electric mowers create a vacuum under the blades, pulling up the grass towards the cutting deck. This action, along with the rotating cutting deck, leaves a “torn” effect on your lawn.

How often do I need to mow my lawn with a reel mower?

We recommend using your reel mower to cut your lawn to a finished length of 1.5-inches. Depending on the weather conditions and the rain, you might have to mow your lawn at least once a week. As a rule of thumb, make sure you’re not cutting off more than a third of the grass blade length, or you risk damaging your lawn.

Can I mow wet grass with a reel mower?

Yes, you can mow wet grass with a reel mower. However, the moisture creates more friction on the cutting blade reel. Therefore, you might find it harder to push the mower around the yard. Wet grass also clogs in the cutting blades, and you’ll find yourself stopping to clear out the reel more often. We recommend waiting until your lawn dries before mowing.

Where is the best place to buy a reel mower?

We recommend purchasing your reel mower from the world’s largest retailer, Amazon. Amazon offers the best selection on reel mowers, at the best prices. If you’re a Prime member, you get fast shipping to your doorstep, with buyer protection on your order. Amazon has the best customer service and a hassle-free returns policy.

One of the best features of this mower is its affordable price tag. Considering the value on offer with this machine, we struggled not naming it the best value offering of this review. The 140cc motor isn’t as noisy as other gas-powered models, and you get a 20-inch cutting deck for efficient operation.

As a gas-powered model, we were shocked to find out that this mower only weighs 43-lbs. That makes this model lighter than some of the electric mowers in this review. If you’re looking for an affordable, lightweight, user-friendly, and effective push mower, then you can’t go wrong with a Yard Machine.

As with any other gas-powered machine, you’ll need to maintain the motor to ensure its longevity and service life. Failing to service your lawnmower will result in the eventual failure of the working parts of the engine, and a costly repair.

Unfortunately, you don’t get a collection bag with this mower, and you’ll need to push it, as there’s no rear-wheel-drive in this model.

This mower suits homeowners with small to medium-size yards. The affordable pricing of this machine makes it the ideal gas-powered model for anyone that needs a mower on a budget.

  • The affordable gas-powered option.
  • Lightweight and easy to maneuver.
  • Triple adjustment system.
  • Ergonomic handle and large plastic wheels.
Cons:

Push Mowers Buyers Guide

Selecting the right push mower for your yard is a challenge when you look at how many different models are available online or at your local dealership.

Selecting the right lawnmower for your yard requires you to buy a machine that suits your application. Here is everything you need to know about choosing the right push mower for your lawn.

What You Need to Look for When Buying a Push Mower

When considering your options for a push mower, you’ll need to take some considerations into account before making your purchase. Here is what you need to know before you visit your online retailer or local dealership for a new push mower.

The Types of Push Mowers

There are three types of push mowers available in this review. Each of the mower types offers a different user experience and suits different applications. Use the information in this guide to decides on the right push mower for your yard.

Gas-Powered Push Mowers

These lawnmowers are the classic option trusted by millions of Americans when it comes time to mow the lawn. Gas-powered options are effective, and the strong motor means they cut through any grass, without placing strain on the engine.

Gas-powered push mowers are suitable for homeowners that live on larger properties, with more robust grass types that an electric model might struggle to cut. However, gas-powered motors are expensive to run and require the addition of 2-stroke oil to the fuel in a specific ratio.

Gas-powered push mowers are also noisy machines, and you could ruin your neighbors Saturday afternoon if you start up the machine to cut your lawn.

Electric Push Mowers

Electric lawnmowers operate using an extension cable connected to a power supply in or around your home. Electric models are far more efficient than gas-powered types, and they offer near-silent operation that your neighbors will barely hear.

However, electric models require a power cable for operation, and it can get annoying repositioning the cable after every pass at your lawn with the machine. Some electric models may also have under-powered motors, and they might struggle to cut through robust grass types.

Most electric models are suitable for townhouse garden maintenance, and smaller yards with softer species of grass.

Battery-Powered Push Mowers

For those homeowners that want an electric model, but don’t want the hassle of electrical extensions getting in their way, choose a battery-powered model. Battery-powered push mowers are efficient and powerful, but they weigh slightly more than corded electric models.

Battery-powered push mowers utilize a lithium-ion battery pack for operation. You charge the battery pack after each use, and the battery typically provides you with up to an hour’s runtime before it needs recharging.

While there’s no cable getting in your way with this electric option, the battery pack adds weight to the machine. As a result, it’s harder to maneuver than corded electric models.

Factors to Consider when Purchasing Your Push Mower

Before you settle on your final choice for a push mower, there a5re some considerations you need to take into account. A push mower needs to suit your yard size and application.

Buying an over-powered mower for your yard is as unfortunate as buying an underpowered mower. Your choice of push mower should match the intended use.

Take a look through the following information for more insight on selecting the right push mower for your yard.

The Cutting Deck

The cutting deck, or cutting width, describes the ability or output of the machine. The bigger the cutting deck, the more output the mower has, and the larger the lawn it can mow. Petrol mowers have the largest cutting decks, making them the best choice for large yards and estates.

If you live in a townhouse with a yard, then you only require a small cutting deck, and it’s better if you choose an electric model with either corded or battery-powered operation.

Machine Weight

The weight of your push mower also makes a difference in its performance and maneuverability. Corded electric options are the lightest available, as the power source is external to the machine. Battery-powered models are heavier than corded options due to the onboard battery.

Petrol models are the heaviest and hardest to maneuver due to the cast-iron motor block used to power the mower. The weight of the mower takes a toll on the operator during use, increasing fatigue levels faster than using electric mowers.

Run Time

If you’re looking for the longest run time for your push mower, then an electric model is your best bet. These mowers connect to your home’s electrical circuit, providing all the power you need to cut your lawn in one session. However, corded options are challenging to maneuver around during use. The length of the extension cord determines the range of your machine.

With petrol-powered mowers, the gas tank capacity determines the run time of the machine. Most models hold enough fuel for an hours’ worth of mowing before refueling. Petrol models are ideal for large properties and yards where tough grass may cause problems for electric models.

Battery-powered models offer you a similar situation to petrol-based push mowers, without the environmental damage involved with burning hydrocarbon fuels. Battery models run for around 45 to 60-minutes per charge, with dual-battery systems offering double the running time of single-cell units. However, they lack the power of gas-powered mowers, and you’ll need to replace the battery every few years.

Clippings Disposal

Most push mowers now come with a 3-in-1 action that mows your lawn, collects the clippings, and turns them into mulch for your garden. We always recommend 3-in-1 lawnmowers, as they offer the best use of your clippings for mulch and composting purposes.

If you don’t have a yard big enough for a compost heap, then a push mower with a collection bag is all you need.

Push Mower FAQ

By now, you should have a better idea of the ideal push mower for your yard. However, we decided to include some frequently asked questions from buyers to this section. Check through the following FAQ for further insight into selecting the right push mower to suit your yard.

What Do You Mean by a “Push Mower?”

Push mowers require you to push them along manually to cut your lawn. They’re different from reel mowers that require your pushing to drive the blades. The motor spins the blades, and all you need to do is direct the mower in the cutting line you want for your lawn.

How Do You Clean the Carburetor?

Petrol-powered push mowers feature carburetors that mix air and fuel at a specified ration. If your carb experiences a blockage in the float chamber or floods during starting, you’ll need to clean the carb to restore the mower to its full operating efficiency. Worn or dirty carbs can leak fuel, affecting performance and causing a fire hazard.

Unless you have experience with stripping and cleaning carbs, then we recommend you take your mower in for a service at the start of spring each year.

How Do You Change the Mower Blades?

To change the mower blades. You’ll need to access the undercarriage of the mower, and loosen the nuts securing the blades to the driveshaft. In most cases, it requires the use of specialized tools for the job.

Therefore, we recommend that you send your mower to a service center for blade replacements. You’ll know it’s time to replace your blades when your mower starts leaving a ragged finish on your lawn.

When inspecting the blades, you’ll notice that notched are present on the cutting edge, probably due to coming in contact with stones. Replace the blades, and restore your machine to full functionality.

Do I need to Drain the Fuel from My Push Mower?

Yes, fuel goes stale after a few months, and if you don’t mow your lawn during the wintertime, then you’ll need to drain the fuel tank and bleed the carb. If you leave old fuel in your machine, it will separate and cause blockages in your carb when you try to start it up the following season.
