Autumn is lovely. The weather cools off, evenings are longer, and trees and shrubs take on their most beautiful colors. You can even smell the difference in the air.

It’s the perfect weather of hiking and finishing off the last bits of gardening for the year. Maybe you spend a few afternoons preserving food from your gardens, or a weekend enjoying some of the best camping of the season.

You can even indulge in your favorite pumpkin spice lattes or warm spiced cider. There’s something for everyone.

But, there’s one less than pleasant chore that comes along with all the enjoyment of the fall. Those beautiful yellow-orange and red leaves turn into messy brown debris on your property and sidewalks.

If you or your neighbors have lots of trees, raking becomes a full-time job. Managing your fallen leaves can take up all your time and energy, leaving little time left over to enjoy the season’s pleasures.

Depending on where you live, you may even have leaf removal requirements. So even if the fallen leaves don’t bother you, your city or HOA may still issue tickets and fines if you don’t stay on top of the mess.

Rather than raking by hand, you can save time and effort by using a leaf blower. In this article, we’re going to focus on backpack leaf blowers since they’re one of the most versatile and comfortable forms of the tool.

We’ll talk about our top picks, the 10 best blowers on the market, and then go over some FAQ’s and a buying guide so you can be confident in the tool you choose.

    • The Best Overall Pick – Husqvarna 150 BT
This leaf blower offers an impressive combination of features and power. • The Runner Up Pick – DeWalt 46V Lithium-Ion Backpack Blower
Our runner up is a similarly powerful and versatile machine and is eco-friendly thanks to a powerful Lithium-Ion battery. While it doesn’t have quite the kick as our top pick, it does come with the DeWalt standard warranty and a brushless motor. This tool will be with you over the long-haul.
    • The Best Budget Pick – Greenworks 80V 580CFM
The Greenworks 80V backpack blower isn’t quite the cheapest backpack blower on the market, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a solid budget choice. It has the power, versatility, and eco-friendly design we’ve come to expect from Greenworks, without the high price tag on so many leaf blowers today.

Husqvarna 150 BT – Best Overall

We’ve already talked about some of what makes this our best overall pick, so let’s get straight into the nitty-gritty details.

The 150 BT weighs in at 23.5 lbs, which is about average for a backpack blower. It’s got some weight to it, but with the ergonomically designed backpack, you should be able to comfortably use this tool for hours at a time.

Not that you’ll need to work for that long unless you’ve got a sizable estate or are a yard work professional.

This blower is powerful enough to produce 270 mph/765 cfm airspeed, consistently. The 2-stage air filtration system also means that this tool will continue working long after other motors will overheat.

Even if you live in a dry or dusty climate, the filter will keep dirt and debris out of your motor, which is one of the main causes of long-term wear and tear and well as overheating and needing to give your blower a break.

This blower automatically comes with a 2-year warranty, but you can register it online with Husqvarna to extend that warranty to an impressive 4 years. The peace of mind of knowing that this is a tool designed to last through years of regular use also helps justify the slightly higher price point over other models.

    Pros:
    • Long-lasting design
    • 2-stage air filter
    • Fuel efficient motor
    • Less exhaust and other fumes compared to similar models
    • High power and airspeed rapidly clears leaves and other small debris
    • 2-4-year warranty
    Cons:
    • A little pricey
    • Requires mixing gas and oil, or purchasing pre-mixed fuel

    DeWalt 60V Lithium-Ion Backpack Blower – Runner-Up

Our runner up pick is another battery-powered option, perfect for rural and suburban use.

This tool also comes with the standard DeWalt warranty, 3 years, which adds some peace of mind.

It’s also part of their 40V tool lineup, which means that you can use the same battery for multiple tools if you buy within the same line.

The 40V battery is a little less powerful than our top pick, producing airspeed at 450 cfm / 145 mph. However, that speed and power is still more than enough for the vast majority of yard debris. It’ll move dry and wet leaves with ease.

DEWALT FLEXVOLT 60V MAX* Blower, Handheld, Tool Only (DCBL770B)

You can also extend your working time by taking advantage of the double battery wells. It works just as well with a single battery mounted. But, if you’re looking for longer operating time, or have a large area to cover, go ahead and add a second.

You can buy this tool without a battery, with only 1, or with 2 compatible batteries depending on your needs.

If you already have several DeWalt 40V batteries from this line of tools, go ahead and save some money by skipping the battery.

If this is your first time buying from this line, take advantage of the cost savings by ordering with two batteries included in the package.

It’s also a lower decibel tool, rated at only 63 dB. Check with your local HOA and neighborhood noise ordinances just to be sure, but this tool is under most neighborhood limits.

    Pros:
    • Reasonable price point
    • Quiet operation
    • 2 battery wells extend your working time
    • Part of a battery-powered tool line with interchangeable batteries
    • Standard DeWalt warranty
    Cons:
    • No rapid charger for this battery line
    • May need to buy a second charger if you use 2 batteries regularly

Greenworks 80V 580 CFM – Best Budget Pick

Our Best Budget pick is still a powerful tool, more than capable of taking care of your typical yard debris. The brushless motor also decreases the power demand of the motor, making this a battery-powered blower that operates more like a gas-powered machine.

You also have great speed control with this blower. Instead of being at one constant speed you can vary the speed and power based on what you need. Feel free to stick to lower settings to move lightweight dry leaves and small debris, or kick on the turbo to move wet piles and larger yard and sidewalk debris.

You can expect airspeed up to 145 mph / 560 cfm from this affordable beast.

It also comes with a 4-year tool warranty and a 2-year battery warranty, so you can be confident that you aren’t trading the longevity of the tool for a lower price point.

Plus, Greenworks concentrates on creating eco-friendly tools and equipment, so you can feel good knowing that the tool itself, and the manufacturing process, is sustainable and produces low-emissions.

This blower also comes with a rapid charge battery power station, making it easier to keep working through the day. We do recommend getting multiple batteries if you have a large estate or plan on using this tool professionally, but you do get reasonable working time out of a full charge.

You can also be confident using this blower in the suburbs since it’s low 60-decibel rating is well within most neighborhood noise regulations.

    Pros:
    • Quiet operation
    • Quick charging batteries
    • High airspeed and pressure
    • Long-lasting warranty
    • Variable speeds
    • Environmentally friendly
    Cons:
    • May need to switch batteries for longer run-times
    • Battery likely to show signs of wear and tear before the blower itself

    Poulan Pro PR48BT

Poulan Pro’s backpack leaf blower offers all the power and control you need in a leaf blower, but it shines in its ergonomic design and weight-distributing harness.

The tool is surrounded by a heavy-duty frame that protects it from accidental falls, bumps, and drops. Despite that frame, it still only weighs in at 22 lbs. That’s the average weight for a backpack-style leaf blower.

The shoulder straps on the backpack are also highly adjustable, so you can custom fit the harness to your shoulders and upper body. The rest of the load-reducing harness is also adjustable, letting you change how it fits and where the weight settles on your body for optimum comfort.

Comfortable weight distribution is critical for long-work times and clearing large quantities of leaves. If you don’t have to take as many breaks and aren’t as tired at the end of the day, that means time and energy saved.

It also offers the high power you need to clear large amounts of leaves and to power through damp clotted piles of leaves. You can expect the airspeed to run up to 200 mph / 475 cfm.

This is a gas-powered tool, though. Poulan Pro offers a pre-mixed fuel cannister, or you can mix the fuel yourself to their specifications. Gas-powered tools tend to have longer work times than their battery competitors, but they do produce exhaust fumes and are also louder than battery operated options.

Depending on the regulations in your neighborhood, you may want to go for a battery-powered alternative. Ultimately, this blower is a great option for comfort and ease of use but may be better in a rural or large-property setting over a typical suburban neighborhood.

    Pros:
    • High power airspeed and pressure
    • Can purchase pre-mixed fuels
    • Average weight
    • Highly adjustable weight-distributing harness
    • The heavy-duty frame protects the internal functions of the tool
    • Long operation on a single tank of fuel
    Cons:
    • Loud operation
    • Releases exhaust fumes
    • Better for rural areas than suburban homes

Powerworks XB 20V Cordless Leaf Blower

This is the best option on our list if you’re looking for a versatile, powerful leaf blower, but also have leg or back injuries that make weight a serious concern. At only 4.4 lbs., this is the lightest leaf blower option on our list.

Since it’s a backpack, you also have more mobility than your typical standing leaf blowers, without the shoulder strain and poor body mechanics required by handheld leaf blowers.

Yet it’s still every bit as powerful as it’s competitors on this list. Its airspeed is rated for up to 310 cfm / 85 mph.

POWERWORKS XB 20V Cordless Leaf Blower with 2Ah Battery and Charger,310 CFM / 85 MPH & 2-Speed Mode, Battery Powered Leaf Blowers for Lawn Care
POWERWORKS XB 20V Cordless Leaf Blower with 2Ah Battery and Charger,310 CFM / 85 MPH & 2-Speed Mode, Battery Powered Leaf Blowers for Lawn Care
    • Our cordless leaf blower is lightweight at only 4.4 lbs, making it easy to carry and work long hours without fatigue.
    • The axial fan design of battery leaf blower delivers 310 CFM at 85 MPH to move the most stubborn leaves and grass.
    • Variable speed trigger and cruise control lets you choose and maintain the speed you want without fatigue.
    • 20V 2Ah Lithium-Ion Battery provides up to 15 minutes run-time on high efficiency.
    • This Powerworks leaf blower is compatible with Powerworks 20V and XB (40V / 20V) batteries.

The Powerworks XB 20V Cordless Leaf Blower also offers a speed variable ergonomic trigger, so you can use exactly the power you need to get the job done, without draining the battery for more power than you need.

However, this leaf blower does have a downside. In exchange for the lightweight durable design, the battery has a relatively short operating life. At its highest setting, you can only expect about half an hour of continuous run time.

That’s about enough to clear your sidewalks, and maybe blow the leaves in your yard into a pile, but it’s enough time to completely clear most properties. We’d recommend getting a second battery, so you don’t have to wait on your battery to charge, or waste more than one day on cleaning up troublesome leaves.

But the high-power brushless motor is efficient over the long haul, and the tool itself should last for years. Plus, if you already have compatible batteries, you can save some money by opting not to buy a battery at the same time.

    Pros:
    • Ultra-Lightweight Design
    • Ergonomic handle
    • Cruise control variable speed trigger
    • Turbo button for an extra boost when you need it
    • High power brushless motor
    • High airspeed and pressure
    Cons:
    • Comparatively short runtime
    • Narrow piping focuses air but takes more work to cover large areas

    Husqvarna 360BT

The Husqvarna 360BT is a step down from our top pick on this list, but it’s still one of the most powerful and most fuel-efficient leaf blowers on the market. Since it’s not quite as advanced or powerful as the 560 BTS, it is also more cost-effective.

The x-torque engine, which is built into every 360BT, no upgrade required, decreases fuel emissions by 60%. That also translates to about 20% greater fuel efficiency, increasing your overall runtime and decreasing your fuel costs.

You have the option of mixing your own gas and oil combination, but Husqvarna also offers pre-mixed fuel for greater convenience and ease of use.

Husqvarna 360BT Gas Leaf Blower, 65.6-cc 3.81-HP 2-Cycle Backpack Leaf Blower with 890-CFM, 232-MPH, 30-N Powerful Clearing Performance and Load-Reducing Harness, Gifts for Men

    • X-TORQ ENGINE: The X-Torq engine design reduces harmful exhaust emissions by up to 60 Percent and increases fuel efficiency by up to 20 Percent

    • AIR PURGE: Removes air from carburetor and fuel system for easy starting

The 360 BT also has an offset handle design, which increases your control and reduces drag on your arm from the high airflow. That means less strain on your arms and shoulders, and less time spent fighting with the airspeed and pressure and more control over where yard leaves and debris go.

The air-purge system also makes it easier to get the motor started by removing excess hair from the carburetor and fuel system. No more fighting to start the motor, straining your back and shoulders before you even get started.

This model also features an adjustable tube length for better control and precision.

    Pros:
    • Easy start motor
    • High fuel efficiency
    • Fewer exhaust fumes
    • 74 oz fuel tank for longer operation
    • Optional pre-mixed fuel available for purchase
    Cons:

Makita EB5300WH 52.5 cc Backpack Blower

The Makita 4-Stroke Backpack Blower is one of the best options if you’re looking to outfit a yardwork team or have a large heavily wooded property you want to maintain.

The 75.6 cc engine is a commercial quality and power part, designed for long-term use and high performance in almost any setting. Since it’s a 4-stroke engine, it also burns fuel more efficiently and more quietly.

Plus, with this gas-powered option, you get the advantages of gas without the inconvenience of having to mix your own fuel. Regular fuel will work just fine for this backpack blower.

At 206 mph / 706 cfm, this is also one of the most powerful leaf blowers available. That means it’ll take less time to move a large volume of debris, and you’ll also be able to move that debris farther than with competitor machines.

Combine that with the comfortable, ventilated harness, and this is a backpack leaf blower designed to be used for hours without causing pain or wearing out the user.

However, even with the built-in muffler system, this leaf blower is louder than much of the competition. Its highest speeds produce up to 76 dB’s, which makes it less suitable for noise-restricted areas.

    Pros:
    • High power, easy start engine
    • Vibration reduction
    • Ventilated harness back
    • Weight distribution harness
    • No fuel mixing required
    Cons:
    • Designed more for professionals than private owners
    • Too loud for many noise restricted areas

EGO Power+ Turbo 56 Volt Backpack Blower

This is another great option for suburban home use thanks to its ergonomic design, high powered battery, and quiet operation.

The EGO Power+ backpack blower also has a slightly different design from most backpack leaf blowers. Instead of the standard wraparound tube and handle design, the whole tube is more solid and offset entirely to the side of your body.

It also uses a joystick-style handle and trigger system, making the blower feel more like an extension of your arm than a separate tool. The design also helps reduce downward drag since it takes advantage of your body’s natural muscle design.

Since you can easily maneuver the blower tube with a single hand, it also reduces twisting and stress through your back and torso. While it’s not as lightweight as the Powerworks, it’s still a good option if you have a pre-existing back injury since it puts less pressure on your core and spine.

EGO’s battery also runs an impressive 8 times quieter than gas-powered alternatives, while still producing between 320 cfm and 600 cfm. That’s power equal to and even greater than some gas-powered blowers.

The blower also comes with a rapid charger, so while it’s best suited to small to medium spaces, you don’t have to wait long to get back up and running. Alternatively, you can purchase a second battery, so your only wait time is the time it takes to switch out the batteries.

    Pros:
    • High powered, speed/pressure variable motor
    • Battery operation for extremely quiet operation
    • Ergonomic design
    • Takes advantage of your natural body structure
    • Easy start design
    Cons:
    • Not designed for large estates or commercial use
    • No way to adjust the blower for left-handed use

    Backpack Leaf Blower Buyer’s Guide

There are three general varieties of leaf blowers. Handheld leaf blowers are exactly what they sound like. Usually, they are smaller, less powerful versions you can hold without other support. Unfortunately, they trade power for a lightweight design.

So, while a handheld leaf blower may be easy to use and lightweight, it’ll take significantly longer to clear your property with most handheld options.

You can also go with leaf blowers that you drag behind you, just holding and controlling the blower nozzle and hose. These can be a powerful choice, and a good option if you have a back injury or other physical difficulties that make carrying a heavy tool difficult.

However, they can be more costly, and are often corded, meaning limited mobility. Plus, they’re difficult to maneuver and control over uneven terrain, making them unsuitable for large estates.

Splitting the difference between the two, there’s the backpack blower. Backpack blowers can be battery-powered, gas-powered, or corded.

They’re usually heavier than a handheld blower but lighter than standing blower units. Backpack blowers also split the difference in terms of power. They’re more powerful than handheld blowers, but high-end standing blowers are stronger.

However, for most properties, the ease of use and maneuverability of a backpack blower more than makes up for the minor difference in blowing power between them and standing units.

Overall, a backpack blower is a better choice for most people. They’re equally well suited to suburban homes and large rural estates, powerful enough for heavily wooded properties, and comfortable for long-term use.

    Things to Consider

We’ve outlined some of the best backpack leaf blowers on the market right now, but knowing a machine is the best and knowing that it’s the right one for you are two different things.

Here are some important considerations that will help you pick the right tool for your needs.

    Gas or Electric?

One of the first things you should consider is your preferred power source. Gas-powered tools are more powerful, and usually, have a longer run time on a single tank than a battery-powered tool has on a single charge.

However, gas-powered tools contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and will make you and your clothes smell like fuel. Plus, if you have asthma or another breathing condition, the emissions may make it difficult to breathe.

Gas-powered tools also usually mean taking some time to mix fuel and oil. You also need to make sure you don’t use old fuel that’s been sitting in the tool for a long time since it doesn’t burn as cleanly and will lower the overall efficiency of your tool.

But battery-powered tools are usually less powerful than gas-powered options. You need to plan on charging time and may need to keep multiple batteries around to meet your power needs.

Batteries are still cheaper than gas in most cases, but they aren’t a one-time cost. You’ll need to replace your batteries every few years as they corrode and lose efficiency.

We didn’t highlight any cord-powered leaf blowers on our list, but there are corded options on the market. These have all the advantages of a battery-powered tool, with the added advantage of not having runtime limits.

However, you can only go as far as your cord, or extension cord allows. The cords can also be a tripping hazard. You need to make sure you use an extension cord rated for your tool’s energy needs and outdoor use.

Those requirements can make extension cords a more expensive investment, although they are usually a one-time cost.

    Weight

Most backpack leaf blowers will hover between 20 and 25 lbs. While there are some lighter options, there are usually trade-offs in runtime or power to achieve a lighter build.

Even with that limited selection, it’s important to think about how heavy a tool you’re willing and able to use. A single pound may not seem like a big difference, but even that tiny difference in weight can make a world of difference in muscle fatigue and strain.

Lighter options let you work longer with less strain on your body. If you have pre-existing injuries, this is an even more important consideration.

    Noise

The last major consideration you should have for your new leaf blower is how much noise the tool produces.

When you’re considering noise levels try to find the top-decibel rating for its highest speed and pressure settings. That way you know that you won’t get a warning or fine for too much noise because you happened to kick the leaf blower into turbo while an HOA associate was on the prowl.

Before you decide what noise level is acceptable to you, it’s important to look at your local regulations. Noise reduction ordinances are often buried in other rules and regulations and are easy to overlook.

If you aren’t sure if your neighborhood has a noise regulation, or you can’t find it in the HOA rulebook, see if they have a service line you can call. Their representatives should be able to look up the information quickly and easily.

You can also lookup decibel comparison lists online to get a better sense of how loud a certain decibel level is. For instance, a vacuum is usually about 75 dB, while a motorcycle is closer to 95-100 dB.

    Other Considerations

While those are the major considerations, we recommend prioritizing in your tool search, other factors may help you decide if you’re torn between two tools.

Price, of course, is a factor, but the warranty may be even more important. Steer clear of tools with no warranty and look for tools with long warranties and few limitations.

If you already have tools from a specific brand, especially battery-powered tools, it’s worth checking to see if they have the tool you need in the same line. That way you don’t need to keep track of as many batteries.

You may also want to look for eco-friendly tools or products made in your home country.

The last consideration is what tools you can have repaired in your area. Look up repair shops and see what brands they work with and specialize in. That way, if something does go wrong, you know that there is a qualified technician who can take care of the problem locally.

    Backpack Leaf Blower FAQs

Which is safer, gas-powered or battery-powered leaf blowers?

While gas is more volatile than batteries, both types of blower are equally safe. Fuel problems and battery overheating are both uncommon issues with leaf blowers. You’re much more likely to be injured from improper use, like turning the blower on when you don’t have a good grip or cuts and abrasions from debris blowback in enclosed spaces.

Overall, if you use the tool properly, gas and batteries are equally safe.

Do you need any safety gear when you’re using a leaf blower?

Yes. At a minimum, you should plan on wearing ear and eye protection.

Even the quietest leaf blowers can cause hearing loss and damage over time, especially if you’re using the tool for more than 10 minutes in a go.

There’s also a risk of dust, sand, and other debris blowing back in your face if you’re working in close quarters or with a lot of obstructions. Protecting your eyes costs you nothing and can save you from painful corneal abrasions.

We also recommend wearing abrasion-resistant long sleeves, long pants and work boots and gloves. Covering your skin protects you from flying debris and windburn.

Are power tools included in noise restrictions?

Most HOA’s and municipal regulations include power tools in their noise reduction initiatives. While there may be exceptions for contractors and other professionals hired by the HOA themselves, you should try to ensure all your tools are under the decibel limit set by your neighborhood.

This is more than just an annoying regulation. Noise reduction measures protect your neighbors, and neighborhood kids and pets, from damaging levels of noise.

Since kids and pets are more vulnerable for ear damage from high decibel levels, those regulations protect the dogs outside on a walk, and the kids playing in the street.

Plus, following the regulation can protect you from expensive fines.

How do I know how much oil to add to the fuel for my leaf-blower?

Since every leaf blower has a slightly different ratio, you should consult your user guide to determine what ratio is best for your blower.

Alternatively, many companies offer pre-mixed fuel which saves you time.

You should also remove any fuel that has been sitting in your leaf blower for a long time. Once it’s been sitting more than a couple weeks it’s separated and lost some of its original potency.

Always replace old fuel with new before you try to start the leaf blower.

    What are cfm and mph?

Just like in your car, mph stands for miles per hour. In this case, instead of referring to how fast your vehicle is moving, the mph on a leaf blower tells you how quickly the air is moving when it first leaves the blower.

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, which is a measure of the volume or concentration of air that is being pushed by your blower.

The volume and speed of the air leaving your blower combine to create its overall power. A high cfm will move larger debris than a fast-moving, but low-density flow of air. But a higher speed will move debris more quickly.

If both numbers are high you have quite a bit of power. But you may make compromises in either the speed or the volume of the air moved to get a different kind of result.
